EXERCISE IN THE ELDERLY

Besides its physical, social, psychological and cognitive aspects, regular exercise provides many health benefits to older adults, including improvements in blood pressure, coronary heart disease, obesity, diabetes, lipid profile, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, neurocognitive function, and cancer. It is recommended for the prevention and management of these conditions. Regular exercise is also associated with decreased mortality and age-related morbidity in older adults. Eliminating physical inactivity would have a significant positive impact on both individual and community health. Exercise prescription may motivate older adults to start regular exercise. The prescription should consist of aerobic exercise, strength training, and balance and flexibility components. Specific exercise recommendations will depend on existing comorbidities and baseline physical activity level.
