Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common tachyarrhythmia, causing increased morbidity and mortality. Atrial remodeling plays an important role in the pathophysiology of AF. There is growing evidence that long-term endurance sports practice contributes to atrial remodeling and increases risk of developing AF. P-wave dispersion (PWD) and signal-averaged P-wave duration (SAPWD) are good predictors of AF. There are few studies investigating these predictors regarding their use in the athletic population to anticipate the risk of developing AF. This review focuses on the risk of developing AF, and changes of PWD and SAPWD in the athletic population.
